Tonsillitis
Tonsillitis is a disorder in which swelling of tonsils takes place. Tonsills are small lymphoepithelial tissues situated near the oropharynx and nasopharynx. These tissues are located at both sides of throat. Being immune-competent in nature they behave as a guarding array of cells that filter ingested or inhaled foreign pathogens.
Tonsillitis is basically an infection caused by virus or bacteria. Sore throat, difficulty in breathing or neck pain is its commonly observed symptoms. Besides these, signs like red tonsils, loss of appetite, ear pain, trouble swallowing, muffled voice, vomiting and ulcers on throat are also seen.
Tonsillitis can be broadly categorized into three forms;
Acute tonsillitis- In this the symptoms last generally for four-five days but if the situation worsens, patient can suffer for more than a week as well.
Recurrent tonsillitis- Here the patients face this issue several times in a year especially when the season is changed.
Chronic tonsillitis- This category involves patients who have a long term tonsils infection.
